Birds, Trees, and Insects: Weather, Climate, and Plant Phenology In-Person
Join Matthew Ayres, Professor of Biological Sciences at Dartmouth, for a discussion of climate change and it's impact on plant phenology - the rate that plants bud, leaf out, and blossom in spring. Matt will discuss 50 years of research on birds, trees, insects, weather, climate, and phenology in the famous Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, White Mountain National Forest. Bring your binoculars if you have them!
This talk will be held outdoors in the Children's Garden in front of the Howe Library, weather permitting (and indoors in the Mayer Room if the weather is inclement), and after the talk may involve exploring plants and trees on the library's grounds. Please be prepared for chilly temperatures!
This program is co-sponsored with the Hanover Conservancy and Northern Woodlands magazine. No registration is required. Email Jared Jenisch at jared.jenisch@thehowe.org with questions.
Matthew P. Ayres is Professor of Biological Sciences, Associated Director, Institute of Arctic Studies, and Chair of the Graduate Program in Ecology, Evolution, Ecosystems & Society at Dartmouth. He studies the population ecology of insects, especially forest pests. His lab group seeks to understand the forces that lead to high abundance and dramatic fluctuations in some species, and which stabilize the abundance of most species.
