Screening and Discussion: "Ghosts of a Lost Cause"

Screening and Discussion: "Ghosts of a Lost Cause" In-Person / Online

Join us for a screening of the new documentary “Ghosts of a Lost Cause,” followed by a discussion with Sherman Neal II, one of the film’s producers. This program will be held in the Mayer Room, no registration required, and on Zoom (register in advance for the invitation here).

This program is co-sponsored by the Howe Library and Difficult Conversations About Race, a monthly open community forum created to address personal and systemic racism. Initiated in 2015 and facilitated by anti-bias educator Ellen Bettmann, the aim of Difficult Conversations About Race is for members to learn about racism with the goal of becoming active participants in creating a more just society.

"Ghosts of a Lost Cause" is a documentary that offers a profound look at how the stories we tell about history impact how we live together today. The film is an intimate portrayal of small-town Murray, Kentucky’s battle to relocate a Confederate monument during the Black Lives Matter movement, and what’s happened in the years before and since. The documentary challenges viewers to confront the ghosts of the American Civil War and the Lost Cause narrative, and the lasting impacts they’ve had on our communities. From forgotten battlefields to enduring symbols, "Ghosts of a Lost Cause" explores the connection between history, memory, and belonging, sparking conversations and inspiring change.

Sherman Neal II is justice advocate focused on developing ethical, equitable, and innovative grassroots campaigns that result in more resilient communities. Sherman is an attorney and decorated Marine Corps Officer. Sherman currently serves as Deputy Campaign Director for Military Outdoors at the Sierra Club. He also founded Rising Tide Sports, a sports consultancy focusing on college athlete empowerment. Sherman is an active community organizer, a documentary producer, and a strong advocate for justice and equity. As a devoted father and dedicated volunteer, he's committed to creating a better future for his children and the community. He currently resides in suburban Atlanta, Georgia.
