Sherlock Holmes Club of the Upper Valley: The Practice of Military Medicine in the Victorian Age and as Mentioned in the Sherlockian Canon In-Person
The stories of Sherlock Holmes begins when he meets Dr. John Watson, a British Army medic who returned to London to recover from wounds received in the Afghan War. What was military medicine practice like in the Victorian Era, and what was battlefield practice like in those days? The Germ Theory of disease was in its infancy, so surgery and medications may not have had the specificity of repair and cure of medicine only a few decades later in the First World War. Dr. Hal Swartz, Professor of Radiology at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, will take us on a trip through time to explore the practice of military medicine in the Victorian Age and the mentions of military medicine in the Sherlockian canon.
