Fall Writing Workshops: MicroFiction - Stories in a Blink

Fall Writing Workshops: MicroFiction - Stories in a Blink In-Person / Online

These microfiction workshops will take place on Wednesday October 2, Wednesday November 6, and Wednesday December 4. Attend any or all of these workshops as their content will vary.

5:15 p.m.—6:45 p.m. Attend in person or by Zoom. Please contact Jared Jenisch at jared.jenisch@thehowe.org to reserve a spot. Attendance is limited to 12.

In this workshop, taught by Jeff Friedman, we'll write stories that strike with the swiftness of a cell phone camera flash or bits of news flying into cyber space, stories that might be as long as a page or as short as a simple sentence. We'll investigate jokes, fables, parables, lists, monologues, dialogues, sketches, anecdotes, tales, emails, and letters as forms for writing the mini story. Francis Camoin's assertion that the mini story's "small size should be its glory not its limitation" will be our guiding principle.

JEFF FRIEDMAN’s tenth collection, Ashes in Paradise, was recently published by Madhat Press. Friedman’s poems and prose pieces have appeared in American Poetry Review, Poetry, New England Review, Poetry International, Cast-Iron Aeroplanes That Can Actually Fly: Commentaries from 80 American Poets on their Prose Poetry, Flash Fiction Funny, Flash Nonfiction Funny, Fiction International, Dreaming Awake: New Contemporary Prose Poetry from the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom and The New Republic, and Best Microfiction 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. He has received an NEA Literature Translation Fellowship and numerous other awards and prizes. His new book Broken Signals was published by Bamboo Dart Press in August 2024.
