Phenology I: Plants

Phenology I: Plants In-Person

Join Matthew Ayres, Professor of Biological Sciences at Dartmouth, for a discussion of phenology onsite at the Dartmouth Organic Farm. When will the leaves come out and the birds come back? This program is co-sponsored by the Howe Library and the Hanover Conservancy. Please register in advance, below. The Dartmouth Organic Farm is at 104 Lyme Road, Hanover, NH. This talk will take place rain or shine.

When will the trees leaf out this year? When will warblers return to the Upper Valley? How do they decide and how well do they choose? Are summers getting longer in the Upper Valley? What would be the consequences? Phenology is the study of the annual timing of biological events. Ecological studies of phenology have exploded in recent years as awareness has grown of the importance of seasonal timing in biological systems. Against the backdrop of springtime in the Connecticut River valley, we invite you to participate in a discussion of the seasonality of plants and animals that make up our local ecosystems.

This is the first of three discussions of phenology at the Dartmouth Organic Farm. The other two will take place at 6:30 p.m. April 29 and 7:30 p.m. May 6 .

Matt Ayres is a professor of Biological Sciences at Dartmouth College. For a few decades, he has been studying the ecology and phenology of plants and animals in the Upper Valley and elsewhere. https://mpayres.host.dartmouth.edu/index.html
