Join us for a discussion of bat phenology onsite at the Dartmouth Organic Farm. This talk will take place rain or shine - but mostly beneath a covered pavilion. This is the last of three discussions of phenology at the Dartmouth Organic Farm.

When do the bats take to our northeast skies or wake up from hibernation? How does the fluctuating abundances of insect populations impact the bats? Is there a synchrony in the phenology of the predator and prey? How will the shifting spring and autumn seasons influence this dynamic? Phenology is the study of the annual timing of biological events.You are invited to join us for an interactive, outdoor program discussing the seasonality of bats and their unique method of hunting insects, such as moths, through echolocation. We will use recorders at Dartmouth Organic Farm to listen for bats, as well as sheet lights to visualize the moth community present.

Jessica Jones is a first-year PhD student in the Ecology, Evolution, Environment, and Society program at Dartmouth College. She studies the phenology and seasonal activity patterns of insectivorous bats and their prey. Her dissertation research will emphasize the use and refinement of unique ecological monitoring techniques in order to answer questions regarding temporal trends in movement ecology, foraging ecology, and roosting ecology of bats.

Pooja Panwar is a fourth-year PhD student in the Ecology, Evolution, Environment, and Society program at Dartmouth College. Her research focuses on using novel Passive Acoustic Monitoring techniques to understand the distribution and changes in bird communities in the forests of the Northeastern US. She is also interested in using acoustic monitoring techniques to gain a deeper understanding of bat biology.
