The Literary History of New Hampshire with Mary Kronenwetter In-Person / Online

Join us for the Hanover Historical Society's Annual Meeting followed by a talk by Mary Kronenwetter. This is a hybrid event. Join us in person in the Mayer Room or online via Zoom. No registration required for in person; register for Zoom here.

The Hanover Historical Society will conduct a brief (15 - 20 minute) business meeting before the talk. 

New Hampshire is home to a rich and diverse literary heritage. Some well-respected New Hampshire authors include Cecelia Thaxter, Robert Frost, Grace Metalious, John Irving, Donald Hall, J.D. Salinger, and Jodi Picoult. New Hampshire-born Harriott E. Wilson was the first African American woman to publish a novel in the US.  Other literary firsts in NH include establishing the first free library. Sarah Josephine Hale was the first women's magazine editor in the nation. The 117-year-old MacDowell Colony has supported a plethora of writers, many of whom have been awarded Pulitzers, National Books Awards and other artistic recognitions. Come explore New Hampshire’s rich and diverse literary heritage. 

Mary Kronenwetter currently teaches for OSHER at Dartmouth and has served as a museum educator at Historic Deerfield, The John Hay Estate at The Fells, and the Enfield Shaker Museum. She holds a doctorate in education and has taught at colleges in the United States, China, and Japan. Mary has authored a New England-based historical novel entitled Pauper Auction.
