Winter Film Series: The Right To Read In-Person
Join us on second Sundays from January through May for our Winter Film Series. Each month we will screen a different film or documentary chosen by a librarian. After each screening, stay for discussion where we’ll explore the film’s themes, context, and relevance. Whether you're a cinephile, a curious mind, or simply looking for a cozy afternoon with good conversation, all are welcome!
This month we're screening: The Right to Read
Produced by LeVar Burton, this documentary explores what NAACP activist Kareem Weaver deems the paramount civil rights issue of our era: childhood literacy. Weaver embarks on a mission to uplift low reading scores in his hometown of Oakland, California. Through personal anecdotes from Weaver, insights from a dedicated teacher, and narratives of two American families, 'THE RIGHT TO READ' delves deep into the battle to equip our youngest generation with the fundamental skill essential for lifelong success: the ability to read.
