The Monk
By Matthew Lewis
The Monk is a landmark Gothic novel that explores the tension between outward virtue and hidden corruption in a society shaped by rigid moral and religious authority. Set in a dark, atmospheric world of monasteries, prisons, and secret chambers, it examines how repression, temptation, and power can distort human behavior. The novel blends psychological intensity with elements of the supernatural and the sensational, pushing the boundaries of what fiction of its time dared to depict. At its core, it raises unsettling questions about hypocrisy, desire, and the consequences of unchecked ambition, making it both provocative and enduringly influential.
